Dedicated To Helping Individuals Overcome Trauma

Welcome to Diamond Recovery Center, where we are dedicated to helping individuals overcome trauma and addiction through various modalities, including EMDR therapy. In this article, we will discuss EMDR therapy and how it can benefit those seeking recovery.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is a therapy that is used to treat clients who have been through traumatic events. It was originally developed in the late 1980s as a way to help individuals effectively process and heal from traumatic memories. EMDR integrates elements of cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, and exposure therapy with bilateral stimulation techniques, such as eye movements or tapping.

How Does It Help?

Traumatic memories can become “stuck” or improperly stored in the brain, leading to ongoing distress and emotional reactivity. EMDR therapy works by stimulating the brain’s natural ability to heal itself.

During the session, the therapist guides the client to recall the traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation. This helps to activate both sides of the brain, facilitating the processing and integration of the traumatic memory. Over time, this allows the individual to desensitize and reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional intensity and associated symptoms.

EMDR therapy can help individuals with a wide range of issues such as PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, addiction, and other emotional disturbances. It has been particularly effective in treating trauma-related symptoms, such as flashbacks, nightmares, hyper-vigilance, and avoidance behaviors. By targeting the root cause of these symptoms, EMDR therapy helps individuals gain relief and experience a greater sense of empowerment and control over their lives.

The process of EMDR therapy typically involves the following steps. First, the therapist conducts a thorough assessment to identify the target memories and related negative beliefs and emotions. Then, the individual is guided through a series of bilateral stimulation exercises, while focusing on the target memory and allowing any associated thoughts, sensations, and emotions to arise. As the therapy progresses, the individual may experience shifts in their perception of the memory and notice a decrease in distress.

Throughout the EMDR process, the therapist will assist in ensuring the individual feels safe and supported, as well as helping them develop coping skills to manage any emotional distress that arises. EMDR therapy typically takes place over several sessions, with each session building upon the progress made in the previous ones.
